And it’s a wrap

img_06021n4900950_44332507_5419It has taken me awhile . . .way too long to be honest . . .to sum up my time in Morocco. 3rd time to Morocco was a charm. I had a great time with my cancer epid co parts (the proof is in the plethora of pics). Thanks Lizzy and Jaye for the MANY memorable evenings!

I couldn’t have asked for my research project to have gone smoother. I had tried to trouble shoot as much as possible before I left the U.S. knowing that there was a lot I would not be able to prepare for. I kept waiting for the big glitch and it never came- thankfully! I was able to collect data at all of the primary peds oncology sources for both Casablanca and Rabat in just 6 weeks! I have a ton of interesting facts on an array of subtopics related to the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric brain tumors in Morocco and now is the time to mold it into a paper. Dr. Soliman says this is the fun part . . .I am not so sure about this, but we will see! No matter the fate of my paper, I am satisfied with international project #1 and all the lessons I learned along the way. Next up . . .late effects research at MD Anderson/Texas Children’s for the year!

Chillin in Marrakesh

sl016064This past weekend destination was Marrakesh. The tourist trap of Morocco! It is an old city with a huge medina that is full of tradition and lets be honest, the more important part, a lot of great shopping! And oh did we shop. Saturday was spent wheeling and dealing the souks of the medina. It was so much fun! If I have learned anything in all of my travels it is how to bargain. My skills were put to the test and all in all I think I did quite well (according to my house/classmates).

We stayed inside the medina (the old city encased in walls) in a riad, the word used to characterize the little hotels with 10-20 rooms total. The more well known riads were full so we ended up staying a little deeper into the medina. It turned out perfect. The first night we had the riad to ourselves and the second night there was only one other couple.

Sunday was spent at the coolest pool I have ever been to (http://www.laplagerouge.net/) It was over the top ridiculous, but SO much fun! It is a pool by day with a DJ stand over the water that played a fusion of US rap and Moroccan/French music and a beach club at night. Jaye, Lizzy and I spent a wonderful Sunday soaking up the rays.

All in all it was a wonderful weekend. It was an easy 4 hour train ride back home to Casablanca. We came home Sunday night just in time to gear up for another work week. This week my goal is to try to obtain the Casablanca neurosurgery cases and get a handle on capturing all of the cases in Rabat!

Off With a Bang!

img_0632img_0638My countless hours of e-mailing and planning seem to have paid off . . . I could not have imagined that my start to collecting data could possibly have gone as smoothly as it has. The head of the pediatric oncology department had told me how wonderful the woman who kept the department records was, but wonderful is an understatement. Even prior to my arrival she was sending me Excel spreadsheets with data to answer questions that I had. Once I did arrive, with few words and many hand motions, I was given more helpful spread sheets, an office and someone that pulls charts for me!

What I accomplished in my first week was what I estimated would take me anywhere from 3-6 weeks. I don’t want to get over enthusiastic, but I feel good knowing that I already have enough information to write up to complete my thesis. Instead of just producing some results there is the potential that I will truly have time to get a good idea of pediatric brain tumors for the whole nation of Morocco versus just Casablanca! My next mission is to try to reproduce the work I am doing here in Casablanca in Rabat, the true capital of Morocco, an hour north of Casablanca. Casablanca and Rabat house the two main oncology centers in the country.
We will see what the coming weeks bring . . .

Weekend in the Sahara

img_0483img_0497Within a matter of hours after arriving in Casablanca we were headed on a 16+ hour journey to the desert (the southern border of Morocco with Algeria) to do some camel riding. It was amazing! I had to pinch myself because there I was in the middle of the desert with 360 degrees of sand dunes surrounding me, in the middle of nowhere!

My two MPH classmates and I, along with a couple from Germany, spent the night in a camp set up a few hours by camel away from the edge of town. We had great stargazing and a very peaceful night of sleep. The following day was spent lazing by the camel pool before a very long trip back to Casablanca. Well, I guess it is time I start doing some research!

Off to the races (camel that is)

I am headed out on another one of my crazy adventures tomorrow! I will be living in Casablanca, Morocco for the next 7 weeks completing my MPH thesis. I will be conducting pediatric brain tumor epidemiology research specific to Morocco with the hopes of making broader generalizations to Northern Africa as little work has been done in this area. I will be updating my adventures and challenges as I explore Morocco and the world of international research on my blog.

I hope everyone has a great start to their summer. I’ll be stateside again in August.

Best,
Leana
